How to Set a Cap Torque Specification

By Lim Xu, Export Manager

A cap torque specification is an application torque window, with the removal torque you expect, proven on your own bottle, closure and product. You set it in four steps: gather the inputs, test a range of application torques, choose the window from leak and removal results, then confirm it after storage.

What goes into a cap torque specification?

A usable specification states more than a target. It gives the application torque target with upper and lower limits, the removal torque expected after storage, and the method used to measure both. Without the method, two labs can read the same caps differently.

ASTM torque retention methods are written for continuous thread closures on containers with matching finishes. The specification therefore belongs to one container and closure pairing, not to a cap size in general. Collect these inputs before any testing starts.

  • The container finish and closure design, including the liner
  • The product and the fill conditions
  • The capping method and the equipment that will apply the torque
  • Storage and shipping conditions, including any air transport
  • Who opens the pack, and whether it must be child resistant

Why does a cap need a torque window, not one number?

Capping machines do not apply exactly the same torque to every bottle. ASTM D3198, now withdrawn, listed rating the performance of automatic capping machines as one use of application and removal torque data. A window gives the line a range it can actually hold.

Each end of the window guards against a different failure. When ASTM announced D7860, it noted that medicine caps which are not tight enough can let water evaporate and change the product concentration. At the other end, D3198 listed measuring the force that breaks hard plastic closures or strips soft plastic and metal ones.

D3198 also noted that its method could be used to establish performance specifications. That is the job here: turn torque readings into limits that a capping line and a user can both live with.

How do you run the torque trials?

The trials link application torque to what happens later. These steps follow the uses described in ASTM D3198, D2063 and D4991.

  1. Choose several application torque levels that bracket the range you expect to use.
  2. Cap a group of bottles at each level and record the actual application torque.
  3. Measure removal torque on some bottles straight away and the rest after storage.
  4. Store at the temperature, humidity and time your distribution plan calls for.
  5. Leak test stored packages, and inspect every closure for cracks or stripped threads.

ASTM D2063 measures removal torque of continuous thread closures for predetermined environmental conditions over time. It covers the case where the application torque is known and no downward force is applied. That is why the actual application torque must be logged for every bottle.

If packs will travel by air, check that the container itself does not leak under differential pressure before shipping. ASTM D4991 covers this for empty rigid containers.

How do you choose the window from the results?

Set the lower limit from sealing and retention. It is the lowest application torque at which stored packages stay sealed and still need a positive removal torque to open.

Set the upper limit from damage and opening. It is the highest application torque that causes no cracked or stripped closures, and that keeps removal torque within what your users can manage.

Then check that the capping line can hold the window. Our guide on how to interpret torque test data shows how mean, standard deviation and Cpk compare a batch of torque results with upper and lower limits. A window the line cannot hold needs a design or equipment change, not a wider number on paper.

Our NLY-20A digital cap torque tester measures both removal (opening) torque and application (locking) torque. Tell us your closure size and the torque values you need to record before you choose a range.

When should a cap torque specification be reviewed?

Review it whenever an input changes. A new closure supplier, liner, resin, product or capping head can move removal torque even at the same application setting.

Research on roll-on aluminum closures shows how sensitive the system is. Closures from different sources gave significantly different opening torques, and the authors warned that one small change can have knock-on effects elsewhere. A quick repeat of the trial at the current window catches this before it reaches the line.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a standard torque value for each cap size?

No single value applies to every pack. ASTM methods such as D2063 describe how to measure torque, not which torque to use. The window has to be proven on your own container, closure and product.

Should torque be measured with manual or automated equipment?

Either can work, as long as the specification names the method. ASTM D2063 uses a non-automated spring torque meter or torque wrench. ASTM D7860 uses an automated, transducer-based meter at a known speed or torque ramp, and measures dry torque only.

Does a child-resistant closure need a different specification?

It needs more inputs. ASTM D7860 covers push down and turn child-resistant closures, where both the application torque and the downward force are known. Record the downward force alongside the torque window.
